How we work

A four-step engagement designed for clarity, not lock-in.

Most HR consultancies hide behind retainers and process. We've built ours to be the opposite: transparent at every step, easy to start, easy to pause, easy to scale up when you need more support.

01
30–45 min

Discovery call

A free, unhurried conversation. You tell us what's on your mind — a live issue, a strategic question, or just "we don't really know what we don't know". We listen, ask questions, and tell you honestly whether we can help.

02
Within 3 days

Scope & quote

A clear written proposal. What we'd do, in what order, by when, for how much. Fixed price for fixed-scope work; transparent day rates for ongoing. No "request a demo" nonsense.

03
Project-dependent

Deliver

We get on with it. Weekly check-ins, shared progress notes, full visibility on what's done and what's next. You get an HR partner who replies before lunch — not a faceless retainer.

04
Ongoing

Embed & handover

We don't create dependency. Where it makes sense, we train your managers, document the playbooks, and step back — staying available for ad-hoc questions, escalations and the next thing.

Sectors we know

Norfolk's economy isn't generic. Neither is our advice.

Fifteen years working across Norfolk's industries means we understand the people challenges that come with each one — and we don't waste your time learning them on the clock.

Manufacturing & engineering

Shift patterns, union relations, H&S-adjacent ER cases, skilled-trade recruitment in a tight Norfolk labour market.

12+ engagements

Hospitality & food

Seasonal staffing, tronc agreements, immigration & sponsorship, fast-turnover ER cases handled at pace.

8+ engagements

Care & healthcare

CQC-aligned policies, safeguarding, registered manager support, complex absence and capability casework.

Specialist team

Charity & not-for-profit

Trustee HR support, sensitive funder-aware restructures, policies that fit small teams with big missions.

Partnership-track frameworks, billing-target performance management, hybrid-working policy reviews.

Multiple firms

Retail

Multi-site rota compliance, theft-and-dishonesty investigations, store manager development programmes.

Norfolk-wide

The founder

Hello, I'm Gemma. I run GLC HR.

Fifteen years inside HR teams across manufacturing, hospitality, professional services and the third sector — most of it in Norfolk and the East of England. I've sat through the all-hands restructures, the late-Friday grievances, the audits and the awkward conversations no-one else wanted to have.

GLC HR exists because most small businesses don't need a full-time HR director — they need someone reliable, qualified, and on the end of an email. That's what I do, working with a handful of clients at a time so the work stays personal.

Why GLC

Six reasons clients stay with us — and refer us on.

01

Plain English, always

We write contracts, policies and emails the way real humans speak. If a manager can't understand it, it isn't going to work.

02

Norfolk on the ground

Norwich-based, Norfolk-focused. Site visits, in-person mediations, tribunal hearings at Bury St Edmunds — we're there in person when it matters.

03

No tied retainers

Start with one piece of work. Pause when you need to. Scale up to a fractional partnership only when the value's clear.

04

One pair of hands

You work with Gemma directly. Not a junior, not a faceless team — the person who quoted you is the person on your file.

05

Fixed-fee where possible

Most casework, policy writes and projects are quoted at a fixed fee. You know the cost before we start.

06

Honest, even when awkward

If your case is weak, your policy is illegal, or your manager is the problem — we'll tell you. That's the point of paying for an outsider.

Case study

How a 38-person Norwich manufacturer cut grievances by 70% in nine months.

When the operations director called, three formal grievances were sitting open and a fourth was about to land. The root cause wasn't bad people — it was inconsistent management, no documented expectations, and a culture of avoiding hard conversations until they became formal complaints.

We rebuilt the manager toolkit, ran a six-week confident-conversations programme for all eight line managers, and put a lightweight performance framework in place. Nine months on, formal grievances were down from one a month to one a quarter, and exit interviews stopped mentioning "the manager problem".

It felt like having an HR director two doors down — without the headcount cost. Gemma fixed problems we'd been kicking down the road for years.

Frequently asked

The questions Norfolk businesses ask us most.

Can't see your question? Drop us a line and we usually reply within four working hours. g.chapman@glc-hr.co.uk

How much does an HR consultant cost in Norfolk?
It depends on what you need. Our HR Healthcheck starts at £450 fixed-fee. Casework is typically £120/hour. Fixed-scope projects (handbook builds, restructures, recruitment) are quoted up-front. A fractional HR partner retainer for a 30–80 person business usually sits between £1,200 and £2,800 a month. We'll always quote before we start.
Do you only work with businesses based in Norwich?
We're Norwich-based, but we work across Norfolk, Suffolk and the wider East of England — Great Yarmouth, King's Lynn, Thetford, Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich, Cambridge and beyond. Most engagements blend in-person site visits for the things that matter (mediations, investigations, training) with remote work for the rest.
Is GLC HR a regulated or qualified consultancy?
Yes. Gemma is a Chartered Member of the CIPD (MCIPD), holds a Master's in HR Management from UEA, and is accredited in workplace mediation. The business is fully insured (£2m PI), ICO registered for data protection, and follows ACAS-aligned process for all casework.
We've never used an HR consultant before. Where do we start?
Start with a free 30-minute discovery call. No agenda, no slide deck. You tell us what's on your mind, we tell you honestly whether we can help and roughly what it would look like. If we're not the right fit, we'll often know someone who is.
Can you handle a live employee relations issue urgently?
Usually yes. We hold a small reserve of capacity for urgent ER cases — grievances, disciplinaries, sickness escalations, suspension decisions. Email or call and we'll get back the same working day. If we can't take it on, we'll signpost you to a trusted alternative quickly.
Do you offer fixed prices or hourly rates?
Both, depending on the work. For defined scopes — a handbook, a restructure, a recruitment campaign — we work to a fixed fee agreed up-front. For ad-hoc support, casework and ongoing advice, we charge a transparent hourly rate. Fractional HR partnerships are billed monthly.
What happens if we want to stop using GLC HR?
You stop. There are no minimum terms on most of our engagements. Retainer agreements have a one-month notice period. We'll always do a clean handover — documentation, file transfers, briefing notes — at no extra charge.
Do you support tribunal cases and settlement agreements?
We support employers preparing for tribunal — case strategy, witness preparation, bundle review, ACAS early conciliation — and we draft and negotiate settlement agreements regularly. For courtroom advocacy we partner with employment law firms in Norwich and London.
